”When working with DTP software such as InDesign, the separation of the design process into separate stages of work is near impossible; instead, layout and micro-typography alternate from one second to the next. Time better invested in a methodical workflow tends to be wasted when fiddling around with irrelevant details.A stringent, ritual-like separation of drafting and production results in a more pronounced, more aware, and more confident approach to design tasks. The quality of one’s drafts increases greatly, as does confidence in one’s own design concepts.

A process-oriented engagement with technological processes – an approach that is especially appealing to front-end developers and programmers – is clearly afforded by the letterpress workshop through working with metal and wood type, proofing presses and the haptic experience of letter-pressed paper. This also encourages the realisation that the entire digital technology for the display of text on screen is based on the technology as well as the terminology of Gutenberg. Furthermore, it provides the insight that coding and working with metal type share common features in their workflow, in reflections on practice and in their iterative processes. Except that in the letterpress workshop one can touch and smell everything.“
